New York Therapy for Panic Attacks

when breathing exercises aren’t cutting it

In as few as 10 to 15 sessions, we help people end their panic attacks and overcome anxiety.

Whether you’re avoiding public transportation, skipping events, or feeling like your world is shrinking because of panic, we can help you get your life back.

Our Panic Attack Therapy Helps If You:

  • have sudden, overwhelming physical sensations of anxiety (e.g., heart pounding, dizziness, sweating) out of nowhere.

  • avoid certain places or activities because you’re scared of another attack.

  • constantly manage your life—keeping certain objects close or staying near "safe" places or people—just in case.

  • feel tired of living with that sense of dread, fearing the next time your body feels out of control.

If any of this resonates, you’re not alone. Many panic attack clients come to us when they’re feeling trapped, exhausted, and afraid.

When is it a Panic Attack?

Panic attacks are your body’s fight or flight alarm going off at the wrong time. It’s the same adrenaline rush you’d feel if there was a fire, except there’s no real danger. Your heart races, your breathing gets faster, and you might feel like you’re losing control, but it’s your body doing exactly what it’s designed to do.

The problem isn’t the panic attack, it is the fear of having another one. That fear can grow into panic disorder, or even agoraphobia, where life becomes about avoiding anything that could trigger another attack.

Why This Therapy Works

Patients come to Elevate when ‘go to’ interventions for panic disorder-
breathing & relaxation techniques - aren’t enough.

At Elevate CBT, we use evidence-based strategies like exposure therapy, which research has shown to be highly effective for panic disorder.

We utilize real, practical techniques that get proven results.

3 Steps of Our Panic Attack Therapy

We work to help you understand your panic attacks and use interoceptive exposure therapy.

  • The first step is understanding what’s happening in your body.

We help you see that these physical symptoms of racing heart, dizziness, and tight chest are uncomfortable but they are not dangerous. You’ll learn why you’re not going to faint, lose control, or have a heart attack and how to break the myths that fuel fear.

  • Using interoceptive exposure, we’ll guide you in facing the physical sensations of a panic attack in a safe, controlled way.

For example, you might spin in a chair or breathe through a straw to recreate symptoms like dizziness or shortness of breath. As you practice tolerating these sensations, they’ll lose their power and so will the panic.

  • If you’re avoiding things like driving, flying, or even grocery shopping, we help you gently face those fears.

Step by step, you’ll rebuild the confidence to do the things you’ve been avoiding, with the tools to handle anxiety when it shows up.

After Panic Attack Therapy

Many clients finish their panic attack therapy in 10 to 15 sessions, and they report:

  • no more panic attacks

  • being less afraid of the sensations of anxiety and panic

  • living without fear- able to travel, drive, or go anywhere they want

  • feeling like themselves again, as capable and confident as peers

  • letting go of substances or coping habits that felt like they were helping, but were really perpetuating the problem

  • calm & clarity, even in situations that used to be overwhelming

Panic Attack Therapy FAQs

  • In exposure therapy, we'll practice intentionally bringing on the sensations in a way that's different from when you experience them in the day to day.

Through repetition and practice leaning into the sensations, you'll over time start to feel more okay with having the sensations, and paradoxically, be less likely to have them.

  • Your therapist will work with you to do a full assessment of your symptoms, and if indicated, will suggest a doctor's visit to rule out any possible medical origins of your symptoms.

Once you and your therapist feel fully confident that your symptoms aren't medically dangerous, you can start exposures.

  • Exposure therapy focuses on targeting the factors that are maintaining your panic attacks, which are different than what causes them in the first place.

Processing early experiences and learning to manage stress may be helpful for other reasons, but we know based on research that exposure therapy helps people truly break out of the panic cycle.
